chasesuspect_1.jpgAn auto theft suspect who ran a red light and led police on a chase from Broadway and Gage in Los Angeles this morning kept driving west, even when he reached the ocean.

I don't know what was on his mind, but he flew straight into the drink at the Port of Los Angeles.

He stood shirtless on the top of the van for a moment and then swam around for 15 minutes before firefighters plucked him from the water and handed him over to LAPD.

About the Blogger

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
