Update: Detectives investigate baby's 'imminent death'

Here's an update on the possible attempted homicide of the 18-month-old boy:

Firefighters were called to "choking report" at a house in the 14000 block of Chadron Avenue about 11:30 a.m. Sunday. They found the toddler unresponsive, county fire Inspector Ron Haralson said.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was reported Monday in critical condition with "death imminent."

Because of that, sheriff's detectives returned to the home Monday to open a homicide investigation. That doesn't mean the baby was murdered. Homicide detectives investigate all deaths like this, even if it turns out to be an accidental death.

Sheriff's detectives released no other details of the case. The residence is located in an unincorporated area patrolled by the Lennox sheriff's station.

Should the baby die, an autopsy will be performed.

I'll have more when I can, but often in these cases -- whether it be a tragic accident, SIDS, "shaken baby syndrome" or something else -- it can take months for an investigation to be completed.

And, of course, let's hope the baby is OK.
