Q. Any results of the Rosecrans DUI checkpoint on Saturday in MB? -- Stev.

A. Manhattan Beach police Sgt. Bryan Klatt said officers screened the occupants of more than 1,500 cars. They arrested 10 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence. One was underage and one was a repeat offender.

Officers cited seven unlicensed drivers and towed 11 cars.

"We screened a lot of cars," Klatt said. "It was definitely worthwhile."

Barney Villa wrote to me about the recent death of former sheriff's Sgt. Mike Foster:

"We met several years ago, I was Mike's partner on the Burglary
Apprehension Team, Lomita Sheriff's Station. We later worked together
on the Arson Explosives Detail-Hazardous Material Team.  Mike is truly
missed, stories such as yours recently in the Daily Breeze remind me of
the great Cop, Husband, Father and most importantly friend to many that
he was.

Thank you Larry, It was very kind of you to acknowledge Mike."

Another reader who didn't want her name used commented about a May 28 story in the Know section about the 1984 Christopher Wilder/Tina Risico caper:

Q. Why in the world would you do an article on a story that took place almost 25 years ago?  I and many of my friends totally object to this.  I wonder if her family/relatives knew this was going to once again be in print?  The only reason I can think of is that the paper is  'hard up' for news...which makes no sense.  It seems typical of the changes (for the worst) since the Breeze was sold.  However, perhaps you were assigned to do the story and had no choice??

A. The Know section's "Histories & Mysteries" page runs on Wednesdays. We look back at an old story. Reporters from the Daily News, Daily Breeze and Press-Telegram are on a rotation to write stories for the page, which appears in all three papers.
My turn came up. My previous time, I chose a topic. In this case, I was assigned the story.

He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
