Torrance cosmetic surgeon in court today

saks.jpgLegal troubles are to Dr. Lawrence Saks like Botox is to Beverly Hills socialites -- they just can't seem to stay away from each other. Saks, who practices in Torrance, was arrested earlier this week and is scheduled to appear in federal court today on mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering charges.

Health reporter Melissa Evans, who covered this story for today's Daily Breeze, made an interesting observation while researching Saks. In 1995, we did a feature story on Saks removing tattoos, at no charge, from kids who want to leave the gang life behind them. It's possible that this "do gooder" charity was really community service that the court ordered him to do after he was convicted in a 1990 case.

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
