Reporting on courts and crime over the years, one of the things that has always stood out is how different domestic violence is. Victims are placed in horrendous situations, often feeling they have no choice but to stay with their abuser because of emotional, physical and financial ties - as well as fear because many abusers threaten their partners or their families with violence if the victim leaves.

The Daily News has a feature today about an LAPD unit that reaches out directly to the victims during domestic violence calls. The program is not city-wide and is pretty unique.

About the Blogger

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
