Valderrama.jpgFuneral services began this morning for Lt. Gilbert Valderrama, a 19-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Police Department, the force that keeps the peace at county hospitals, parks and buildings. Most recently, Valderrama was a watch commander at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Valderrama was killed in an off-duty crash in Hacienda Heights on July 9. An 18-year-old man also died.

A colleague described Valderrama as a mentor and motivator for those who served under him.

Channel 2 interviewed his wife Tuesday evening.

Officer Darryl Erkel said:

I knew Val for several years because I worked with him at Bel-Air Patrol and I attended the police academy with him at Rio-Hondo. He was always very personable and an all-round "good guy"! I was saddened to hear of his passing, but he will never be forgotten by those who loved him! Rest in peace my brother!

I also worked with Val at Bel-Air Patrol. He was liked and well respected by all. I will always have a place in my heart for him, and there will never be one like him. My sympathy to his wife, Tello, Lando, Mario, and the rest of his kids.

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
