HERMOSA BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

(August 20th 2008)

"Local man charged in a stabbing at the Hermosa Beach Pier".

SUSPECT:            Michael Arthur Cody

Hermosa Beach resident

20 years old

VICTIM:            Withheld for safety concerns

CHARGE:            664/187 PC- Attempted Murder

245(a)(1) PC- Assault with a deadly weapon

BAIL:               $750,000 held at Los Angeles County Jail

SYNOPSIS:            The suspect stabs the victim in the back (possibly a knife) after an altercation under the Hermosa Beach Pier in an unlit area.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office filed charges on the suspect.

DETAILS:            In the early morning hours (approximately 2:00AM) of 8-17-08 the suspect and the victim became engaged in an altercation which ultimately resulted in the suspect stabbing the victim in the back several times.  The suspect was last seen fleeing the area on a bicycle.

HBPD officers responded to the location and contacted witnesses, while the HBFD treated the victim for the possibly life threatening injuries (due to nature and location of stab wounds).  The victim was transported to an area hospital where the injuries were later determined to be non-life threatening.

The suspect and the victim were involved in an on-going dispute, which finally became a physical altercation.  The victim and the suspect have been acquaintances for several weeks, and it does not appear to be a random act.

HBPD officers located the suspect walking in the area of Hermosa Avenue and Herondo approximately 50 minutes later.  He was contacted and arrested without incident.  The weapon in question is outstanding.

Charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon were filed.  The suspect is being held at the Los Angeles County Jail on $750,000 bail.

Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Dorothy Scheid at (310) 318-0360.  Cody's next court appearance is 9-12-08 at Torrance Superior Courthouse.
