RPV reader 'taken aback' by vehicle burglaries at Green Hills
I received this letter from Andrew Minassi of Rancho Palos Verdes in response to my story
about vehicle burglaries at cemeteries.
about vehicle burglaries at cemeteries.I knew that theft and robbery are some of the largest crimes that occur on a day to day basis. However, before reading your article I have never even imagined that criminals would act so low as to break in citizen's cars and steal when they are mourning with their lost loved one. I was taken aback when I read the story of the young woman and her mother who visited the grave of her father and realized her car
has been broken into.
As a child, my parents taught me to always have respect for anyone, let alone the dead. Ever since my grandmother passed, I too visit her resting ground at Green Hills Memorial Park, and not once have I ever thought of our car being broken into. While visiting a grave or burial ground, I believe the visitors are in a state of peace, reconnecting with their loved ones while everything is off their mind except the deceased family or friend.
Now, putting myself into a criminal's mind, I realized that it might be perhaps the perfect chance to rob an innocent victim without their knowledge. Obviously, a criminal without a heart or respect of the dead could only pull off this mastermind theft, as the article states, "It really is sick," Frew said."But (thieves) just figure it's a crime of opportunity" (Altman).
I believe that theft in any way is wrong, let alone in cemeteries.. Just as your
article states, Mr. Altman, it is like stealing from the dead themselves. In order to figure out where criminals will act next, we must put ourselves into their shoes. I am sure our police departments are doing the best they can in preventing more and more of these horrible and heartless crimes form reoccurring. For the time being, we should all take extra caution and make sure we lock our car doors wherever we go, not just when visiting our loved ones.
I enjoyed reading your article and hope to see many more in the near future.
Sincerely,
Andrew Minassi
