The Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division was evacuated for more than an hour today while the bomb squad investigated a suspicious package. Officer Ana Aguirre said the call came in just after noon about a box left in the lobby of the station at 221 N. Bayview Ave. in Wilmington.

The station was evacuated "as a precaution," Aguirre said, while an X-ray machine on a robot was sent in. The box's contents were determined to be harmless, and everyone returned just after 2:40 p.m., Aguirre said.

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
