Former Westchester school principal pleads guilty to child pornography
The former principal of Del Rey Continuation School in Westchester pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of child pornography possession and was sentenced to probation.
Randolph Cornfield, 61, of Playa del Rey, made an open plea to the court - meaning he did not have a deal with prosecutors - the same day his trial on two felony child pornography possession counts was to begin.
The District Attorney's Office said Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg gave Cornfield three years probation.
Prosecutors said they objected because they felt prison time was appropriate.
Cornfield must also register as a sex offender and is prohibited from from being alone with anyone under the age of 16 or viewing pictures of children on the Internet.
"Posing as a 12-year-old girl, Cornfield engaged in sexually explicit conversations in an Internet chat room and offered to provide nude photos of minors," according to prosecutors.
After a tip, authorities searched his home and discovered child pornography at his Playa Del Rey residence. He was arrested in June.
