Reader: 'Apologize to his family and longshore community'

Just got this e-mail from Tony Mattera, who works at the port. Some longshoremen have taken exception to the fact I reported San Pedro homicide suspect Rufus Lee Atchley's occupation. Mattera apparently doesn't like today's story that lists Atchley's police record.

"Why are you ruining the character of a man that might have done something right for his community and his family.  You do not know the details yet, but you have no problem writing as if you are his enemy. I have a feeling once you find out why he was arrested , you would probably do the same in his situation (if you consider yourself a man). I think it would be fitting for you to appologize to his family and the longshore community for "slinging mud". You see, its writers like Art Maroquin and yourself that ruin the reputation of the people that risk our lives every minute down on the docks to onload your cute gucci shoes. I wonder what would happen at our next union meeting if ask all my brothers and sisters to boycott your news paper? I personally stopped buying your news paper after our last contract negociations due to Arts' many articles covering our negociations. If you don't like us just write an article stating why. Instead Art and yourself write articles that paint ugly pictures of us in the face of our own community. I am looking foward to your prompt appologies.

P.S. -I will be posting this at our dispatch hall in the morning"

Tony, I can assure everybody that if Atchley was a doctor, lawyer, policeman, waiter, street sweeper, dogcatcher or newspaper reporter, I would have reported that. (Note all the stories we do on teachers, coaches, doctors, lawyers, cops and others who get themselves into trouble.)

Anyway, I don't have anything against the guys and women on the docks. They do hard work and get paid for it with help from a strong union.

(Just so everyone knows,  I don't wear Gucci shoes. I'm a reporter wearing something called Georgio Brutini that I bought in a closeout when Shoe Pavilion went out of business. They are quite comfortable, but are in need of a shine.)

so understanding the comment correctly..if you are a *man* you go out in broad daylight close to a school and shoot and kill somebody in the street ? let's just say...if thats the case the world would be better without *men*

You talk as if you were the victim, can we get this straight here, a person is dead, our community was held at a standstill for hours because of this man, and if you were buying the paper, you would be well informed about all the other news the Daily Breeze covers. It had nothing to do with the fact that he was a walking druggie with a criminal record and no liscence, driving trucks, handling heavy machinery, and yes unloading all those Gucci shoes Longshoreman, you simply cannot justify killing a person, no matter what. There is such a system called the Judicial System. If you think this crime was justifiable then we do not need people like you down at the docks either... Think before you write... better yet, look around you, you might be working with someone just like him that might put your own life in danger, perhaps you just don't care....

Thank You Tony M. for your support. This is a very difficult time for my family. It really saddens me to think that people are willing to jump to conclusions without knowing the facts. We the family don't even know the facts. It is said in the good book "He that has no sin cast the first stone" How can you criticize me for the speck in my eye when you have a log in yours? My point is that right here and now without facts just media hearsay no one has the right to brand my brother guilty. We are taught in our education system that we have a judical system that until we are proven guilty we are innocent. In closing I would appreciate that the public have some compassion for my family and all that know my family please say a prayer for my brother. Unfortunately, the media has painted a very negative image.

Please stop talking bad about my friend. His family does need an apology and they deserve some RESPECT! Yes the community was at a standstill and it happened a ways away from a school if you read the article correctly regardless those children would never be harmed by rufus anyday or time no matter what! Walking druggie?Who are you to say that? You don't know him but from what you read and when you point one finger 3 point back at you.GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT exactly! How could we forget that? If you ever came in contact with him he made you laugh and helped you if you needed it. He was a man that day and he is still a man now...an INNOCENT MAN!!! Longshoreman or not he is still a great guy with a HUGE heart! say what you want because I know who he really is not you> ***FREE RUFUS!!!***

"BREAKING NEWS" MR PAPERMAN SHAME ON YOU

Ok, this is kinda silly don't you think.

What right? That would be the First Amendment.

Mr. Atchley has plenty of rights to a fair trial. That would be the Sixth Amendment.

The family isn't dealing with the consequences of this because of me or anything the paper does, or for that matter, anything anyone else says in the comments or letters.

The family is dealing with the consequences of Mr. Atchley's alleged actions.

^^^^That's only in a court of law......public opinion is NOT bound by that premise. If it walks like a duck.....IT'S A DUCK!!!!
So, no matter how you slice it he's GUILTY OF MURDER!!!
And BTW, Larry Altman's reporting of THE FACTS is what a reporter/journalist does...deal with it.

First off, my family and I are behind Rufus and his family! We believe strongly that LU LU is innocent! I know that his family is going through a bad nightmare but have faith lu lu is still here with us and justice will favor him. and as for many of you so called pedro people all you are a a bunch of backstabbing good for nothings. you hunger for people like rufus to point fingers at when you yourselves have ugly skeletons in your closets. so do yourselves a favor stop your negative finger pointing, leave lu lu's family alone worry about your own because you never know it could be you on the other side of justice. and to lu lu's family keep strong and ignore the negative comments. we love you LU LU

Larry,
Please ignore all the negative letters and posts. I for one am very impressed with your reporting for the Daily Breeze. I think you are very fair to all parties involved and only present the facts. Keep up the good work!

Dear Nikki, you are absolutely right, Rufus's family is owed an apology, now go down to Harbor Division or LA County and tell Rufus to apologise to his family for putting them through all this, and while your at it, tell him to apologise to all those families and children that could not get in their surrounding homes, tell him to apologise to the many hungry tired children that wanted to go home, to apologise to the many people that needed to get to their medications and feed their pets, yeah "FREE RUFUS"! Did I know him, yes I did since high school and did I associate with him, hell no, he was an arrogant jerk that looked down at people like myself and quite frankly did not care for many. I did read the article correctly, but it's people like you and his daughter that infuriate the readers. Why are you painting such a great picture, he was not at all this happy father of the year type of guy, of course, he had his crowd he hung out with and his type of people he got along with, but for the most part, the tax paying family oriented folks like us were not his favorite. Rufus was a man with a chip on his shoulders and dared you to knock it off, I am no one to judge, but give me a break, his mother knew what type of person he was wether he was a working man or a junkie they knew. You want us to let up, then shut up with the stupid remarks about how much of a great guy he was and how he would never hurt a child, he hid in his parent home putting them in danger, for god's sake, we knew him. Good luck and get your signs ready with "FREE RUFUS" so you can stand outside the court room where he will be tried and arraigned for the crimes he committed....

Risking their lives... whatever... if they do things right than nobody's life is at risk. Quit trying to say that being a longshoreman is some kind of honorable job, it isnt. its a exaggerated warehouse worker with (in my opinion) a crooked ass union that makes things difficult for people to import their stuff.

Isabella said:

Larry,
Once again, ignore these idiots. You are doing a great job. Don't let the longshore mob scare you.
A man has been murdered! The 'Free Rufus' crowd keeps stating there are facts that the public doesn't know; well then state them! If you have some facts that might change our perception of the murderer, let us know what they are already.

Mr paperman nobody should have the right to release information about anybody before the trial is over what kind of justice can anybody get from that your family my family who evers family . I just wonder what if Rob had the gun and rufus was just trying to protect himself. since nobody is really saying what's going on not even you. and maybe what you release to everybody is why he ran. yes it his fault for running and yes his family is paying the consequences. But for you to release his record I believe made it worse.

Susan said:

I have read the comments that were made. I think people are forgeting the victim here. He was a special person. Yes, he had his faults too, but not enough to deserve being shot to death. I have known him since his early high school days. Back then he was a sweet kid. I do know people change but we, his friends and family, have lost a good friend. We will never see or talk to him again. It upsets me when they speak about Rufus and how mistreated he has been, when most of it was he own doing. He did not have to hold up in his parents house. All he had to do was surrender. Why did he run and hide? No one seems to be considering what Robby's friends and family are going through. We have lost greatly. No matter what Robby might have done; he did not deserve to be shot. We miss you Robby. Thanks for your reporting. If it was not for you we would not know what is going on.
