Reader: Attempted murder isn't only problem at Bally in Hawthorne

Got this email from a reader concerned about the stabbing at Bally Total Fitness in Hawthorne last week.

"Have you found out why this attack occurred? I am a concerned patron of the gym. I am there every day in the morning and sometimes in the evening. Fortunately I was not there the day that this happened.

I suspect that if it was just a random unprovoked attack, that the man responsible for the attack may have been homeless. There are numerous men who appear to be homeless that frequent the gym. One of them that I see often always smells of alcohol. Some of them go to workout, most come to shower and use the restroom.

Another good story you may want to report on is the deterioration of gym facilities. The Bally's on El Segundo Boulevard would be a great place to start.

Half of the exercise equipment in the front of the gym either doesn't work properly, or doesn't work at all. I have had to call the health department on that facility because of how unclean the spa, shower, bathroom areas have been.

Clogged sinks, shower heads missing, floor tiles missing, what appears to be mold covered over by tiles in the spa area, accumulated dirt on the spa walls, dirty floors, no toilet seat covers, no hand towels, etc."

From what I understand, the motive isn't known. He possibly might have had some mental issues, but police haven't determined that. And as far as the conditions in the gym, sounds like they'll start losing patrons.
