UPDATE: Theory on last week's San Pedro homicide
I just talked briefly with Los Angeles police Detective Jim Perkins. I didn't get much, but here is the deal so far on last Monday's homicide where Rufus Atchley is accused of killing Robert Banes on 11th Street:
"Part of what we've heard is the victim had disrespected one of (Atchley's) daughters," Perkins said.
The police don't know what this was about, however. Perkins said detectives have talked to Atchley's daughters and "none of them will admit to it."
Although Atchley had a record of prison and drug possession, the shooting was not during a drug deal.
Detectives believe Banes was near his Nissan Altima parked on the street. Atchley might have been driving by, saw him and stopped. They don't think he was lying in wait. They argued and Atchley shot him.
I also spoke today with one of Banes' closest friends who described him as a man who loved music and working at his job repairing railroad signals.
I'm told Banes' family is having a memorial service for him in San Pedro.
I'll be writing an update for the paper.
