The Hawthorne Police Department has started a Twitter account for residents to keep track of what's going on in the city.

Follow "HawthornePD" to get real time information.

Two other departments also have Twitter accounts: Follow Torrance police at "Torrance PD" and Gardena police Chief Ed Medrano at "GPDChief."

That's cool. It would be better if their internal system actually published the messages instead of a human operator.

I'm rather upset my tax money is being paid for someone to twitter. twitter is already a filth hole but now someone at the police department has to take time away from what they are doing to twitter? I think is in an impractical use of our tax money

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
