I noticed this too when I called the new Harbor police station the other day and got voice mail. I figured some residents of San PEE-dro wouldn't be too happy with the answering machine's voice pronunciation of "San Paydro."

Talk about an easy way to rile up the folks down there. Don't mess with San Peeeee-dro.

It's long been a controversy. Go with the Americanized version of Pee-dro or the Spanish version of Pay-dro.

My colleague Andrea Woodhouse opines on this subject on the South Bay Pipeline blog.

San Paydro sounds more sophisticated. Plus, it's closer to its correct Spanish pronunciation. I never quite understood why SP locals prefer to say "Peedro", when to me it conjurs up images of bodily fluids.

What an idiotic comment! The way its pronounced has been that way since I can remember and I am a native San Pedran ( PEDRO) please !

Its simply the way native residents prefer to speak of their home. OK?

It's all preference. Like Los Feliz. I don't give a damn, it's NOT "Laws Fee-liz."
