Print edition's 'shelf' helps catch 'wanted' Hawthorne suspect
We just got our first "shelf" capture.
Several weeks ago we began running photographs of "wanted" suspects on our crime page in the Daily Breeze print edition. It's usually on page A7 above the police blotter on Wednesdays. The boxes on the top of the page are called the "shelf."
Before we started this, I sent out an e-mail to South Bay departments asking for wanted fliers. Only Hawthorne and El Segundo responded. We've run some photographs of suspected forgers and car thieves and burglars, some with names and others unidentified.
On April 21, we ran a photo of Sioni Mangisi, 39, who allegedly stole a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe parked at the Rustic Light on Hawthorne Boulevard in Hawthorne on Oct. 9. Officers in the Hawthorne helicopter gave chase.
Driving at high speed, Mangisi allegedly lost control of the SUV in the 13000 block of Washington Avenue, hit several cars and a school fence. The damage was nearly $50,000. Mangisi broke his leg and was taken to a hospital, but was not arrested. He was charged, but police didn't know where he was.
Lt. Mike Ishii told me that somebody who knows Mangisi saw his photograph and contacted him. Mangisi then called the Hawthorne police and said he would surrender. Time passed.
Then today, he showed up with his attorney at the Hawthorne Police Department and was arrested.
The key to this is we have success on the day I ran out of wanted fliers. I was about to send out another e-mail to all the departments who haven't responded and now I can tell them it works.
And it's nice to know somebody is reading the paper.

FYI Manhattan Beach PD contributed to your little Wanted section.....I believe you had a picture posted of a older black male wearing a fidora style hat that was wanted by them for forgery
They did, sort of. They sent that flier to me a few months earlier. I hadn't used it when the "Wanted" idea came up. I had that one ready to go, but they haven't sent any more since.
I can add, however, that I was told today that a story I did on fraud suspect, Kenneth Jones, helped bring forward another victim who has brought alot more evidence to the prosecution.....Manhattan Beach arrested that guy a couple weeks ago.
