Two reputed associates of a Hawthorne gang were arrested today in a raid that netted guns, an assault rifle and counterfeit cash.

Thomas Montenegro, 35, and Jacob Tejeda, were taken to jail following an early morning raid in the 11900 block of Birch Avenue, Hawthorne police Lt. Mike Ishii said.

Police found an assault rifle, several handguns and narcotics-related evidence in the house, Ishii said.

Ishii said the arrests come "as a result of our ongoing fight against gangs terrorizing our community."

"These weapons were recovered from a home where several children also lived," Ishii said. "The living conditions were simply horrendous and we will be working with the Department of Children Services for further investigaton."

Ishii said six children and a couple women also were in the home.

Montenegro was arrested on suspicion of possession of counterfeit currency. Tejeda was held on suspicion of weapons possession offenses.

The Gardena police special weapons team assisted the Hawthorne police team in serving the search warrant.
