A Lomita man was arrested when he allegedly tossed fireworks under a Sheriff's Department mounted posse working in Hermosa Beach on July 4, police said today.

Craig Conant, 25, was arrested on suspicion of harming, interfering with or obstructing a peace officer's horse or dog, and possession of an explosive device, police said.

The incident occurred when sheriff's deputies on four horses, joined by two Hermosa Beach officers on two horses, worked on the Strand, Hermosa Beach Police Chief Greg Savelli said.

Conant allegedly threw fireworks under the horses in an attempt to spook them. The horses remained calm and deputies were able to chase and arrest Conant, the chief said.

Savelli said the horses "are trained for just such antics, did not react and continued to work throughout the day and night."

Savelli said he hopes to utilize the Mounted Patrol next year and possibly at other events, including the Fiesta, St. Patrick's Day Parade and on New Year's Eve.
