Firefighters rescued a motorist trapped in a car that left the Harbor Freeway and crashed into a tree in San Pedro this afternoon.

The crash occurred about 4:25 p.m. as the driver traveled south on the transition road to the Vincent Thomas Bridge, Los Angeles city fire spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Forty fireighters, including those assigned to the Heavy Rescue Team from Silverlake, responded.

The driver was freed and taken to a hospital.

Information about the driver was not immediately available.

The transition to the bridge is closed at the moment, so take PCH or Anaheim.
