BREAKING NEWS: Fires in Rancho Palos Verdes
Firefighters doused three small fires that broke out late Friday near the Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, authorities said.
The blazes were reported across the street and up the hill from the golf course at 1 Ocean Trails Drive about 4:45 p.m., witnesses and firefighters said.
"We noticed some smoke up the hill," said Brian Donnelly, a San Pedro resident who was picnicking at Founders Park. "We watched it and it got bigger and bigger."
About 140 firefighters arrived to put out the flames, described as 55 feet in diameter and 1000 feet apart, County fire Inspector Frederic Stowers said.
Donnelly said that at least one of two fire helicopters picked up water from one of the golf course lakes and dumped a couple loads on the flames.
No one was hurt and no injuries were reported.
David Matish, assistant professional at Trump, said the fires were directly across from the facility.
"They put it out. It was pretty well contained," Matish said. "It wasn't a scare. They were very quick."
The fire's cause was not immediately known, but Donnelly said that a sheriff's deputy drove by and "asked if I had seen a couple of 20 year olds."
Deputies had no immediate comment.
