Police issued 150 citations to drivers and towed 13 cars during crosswalk stings in Hawthorne, police said Friday.

Officers on Wednesday issued citations to drivers who failed to stop for police officers walking in crosswalks at 136th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard, and at 116th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard.

Police took to action because three pedestrian fatalities have occurred in the last two years.

This story would have been more useful, if the law regarding pedestrians in crosswalks was mentioned. Can a driver enter a crosswalk after the pedestrian is already half way across the street, and his vehicle won't pass anywhere near the ped?

The cars that refuse to stop before the line at intersections or residential streets and just cruise on over are the ones that really annoy me. It's like they think the line is there to help peds walk straight...

I too would be interested in more details of the citations.

Daniel Lee, anyone who took the DMV Driver handbook and passed the written test, knows that once the pedestrian crosses the center divider line, you as a driver cannot proceed, you must stop. But unfortunately, most people don't read the DMV Drivers handbook, or simply in a hurry to get to the next Starbucks or pack of cigarettes to obey this law. With the economy the way it is, this is a great way for Hawthorne PD to make more money for the city. Build a new park for kids, or Senior center for elderly, hint hint!!
