Alberto Meza1.jpgAlberto Ramon Meza, 48, of Whittier was arrested last Friday when he was spotted cutting locks on two bicycles on Pier Plaza in Hermosa Beach.

Meza is a "recyclables" scavenger who frequented the downtown area to collect cardboard,

Two bicycles were discovered in his truck, covered with a tarp, police said.

Meza has previous arrests that include petty theft, robbery and burglary.

Police recently said bicycle thefts were skyrocketing in the Beach Cities. They hope Meza's arrest can help reduce some of that.

What a cheap shot to try and humiliate a person by placing his picture on the news for petty theft. Doesn't the police have more worthy news?
The more disturbing problem here is joblessness and the negative light we put our "neighbor" in for having problems.

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
