Police said today they were concerned about a man who asked a parent a strange question as he appeared to be watching a girl walking home from school.

Officers responded to 135th Street and Isis Avenue about 3 p.m. when a parent feared the man was looking to abduct a student walking home, Hawthorne police Lt. Mike Ishii said.

The parent told officers that the man pulled up in a white van and approached her as she waited for her child. He said, "I know this is a strange question, but isn't it weird for a small girl to be walking alone how easily the girl could be abducted?"

He then drove away. The parent said it appeared he was talking about a girl walking alone near the van.

The concerned parent waited with the girl. The man in the van never approached her and the girl was not aware he was there.

The parent then escorted the girl back to the school.

The van  was described as a white minivan with out of state plates (possibly Oregon.)

The man is white, in his 40s, with salt and pepper hair. He had German Shepherds in the van.

Anyone who saw the van or has information to identify the driver is asked to call the Hawthorne police at 310-349-2700.

ATTENTION PARENTS!!! Where is the license plate number????? This just upsets me to no end. I read about this stuff all the time and the most important information is never available. This pedophile's vehicle was close enough for her to hear him, but she neglected to get a plate number. This is ridiculous!!

The most obvious explanation is that he may have been really concerned for the girl. I have driven in this area many times and its not uncommon to see single boys or girls walking home from the elementary school by themselves! With the rising crime in Hollyglen these days (10 burglaries in the last few weeks, just saw police responding to another one today...), I do not find this to be an odd concern that a conscientious adult might have...

Perhaps the police would be better served to track down the REAL criminals stalking this neighborhood.

did he have facial hair? he's probably a terrorist too

Asking a qustion of concern does not create probable cause for arrest.

Wow, what a great way to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt in the community. Did he actually do anything wrong? Did he contact the child? I agree with Terry here - maybe he was pointing out the obvious to another adult (parent in this case).

This was going on at the same time the Hawthorne PD was doing a sting operation around Ramona Elementary giving parents tickets for parking their cars for longer than five minutes! NICE!

I think it's a really far stretch to accuse this man of being a pedophile. Albeit odd, perhaps he really was only making a comment. And in this day and age it is sad to see children left alone in these situations (having to walk home alone), but we don't walk in their parents' shoes. We only know what we can see ourselves and what we've, personally, experienced. Not everyone can afford day care, a nanny, or to live on one income. For those who are, they should consider themselves blessed and fortunate. I was a latch-key kid, and by God's grace was protected from any harm's way. But both my parents had to work, could not afford a nanny or babysitter, which left me walking home many a day alone. My parents did the best they could; I'm sure most do.
