The LA Times just posted a story saying an Airport courthouse jury has convicted Dr. Christopher Thompson of assault with a deadly weapon and other charges for deliberately injuring two bicyclists by slamming on his brakes in front of them in Brentwood.

A lot of you have been interested in this one.

According to Jack Leonard's story, Thompson bowed his head as the verdicts were read.

Here's the Times story.

I really really hope NO jail time for the good Doctor.
The spandex wearing instigators need to learn how to ride in a line and not side by side admiring one another. Cyclists around here are pompus idiots looking for a lawsuit.
Someone should tell them that training for their non-existant Tour de France shouldn't be on tight, residential mountain roads during rush hour when residents are trying to get to work.

NO JAIL TIME!!

Agree--no jail time.
Bicyclists are a hazzard when they ride side by side.Should be a law regulating them on roads.
If they want to ride side by side, use the bike paths.

The fact is that the driver of the motor vehicle was the hazard. Some need to get over their sense of privilege and learn to share the roads.

The California vehicle code recognizes bicycles as legitimate vehicles on the roadway, so just like it wouldn't be acceptable to brake-check another car, the same applies here.

This idiot chose to use his vehicle to "teach them a lesson". Instead he was found guilty of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of battery and one count of mayhem. I really hope he does he entire dime come sentencing!!!

My hope is after he is released, hopefully he isn't allowed to drive a motor vehicle and will need to seek alternate forms of transportation - perhaps a nice 10-speed would be just what the doctor ordered...

Jungle Jim - you can't even ride side by side on the bike paths most of the time now, because too many pedestrians ignore the "bikes only" signs and walk four or five abreast, blocking most of the path.

Supporter for Dr. Thompson - while I am not a supporter of this man because of his reckless actions, I respect your right to be. However, please do not lump all cyclists into one category. I enjoy riding my bicycle around our beautiful city, and myself and many like me could never be described as pompous or looking for a lawsuit (or as wearing spandex or training for anything, but I don't take it as a personal insult when I see people who are wearing appropriate gear for long rides - I hear chafing can be quite a pain!). I've definitely felt unsafe on our roads, but I would never blame all drivers for this. And I get just as mad as anyone else when I see my fellow cyclists breaking the laws of the road. (I'm one of the ones who actually does come to a complete stop at stop signs and I never ride my bike on a sidewalk - but if I feel unsafe on the road, I will dismount and walk my bike on the sidewalk.)

And few of us can compare this experience to anything we've dealt with as either drivers or cyclists - the "good doctor" intentionally injured these bicyclists, and said just as much to the police officer who arrived on the scene. Sure, his story changed when he realized he was going to be charged with a crime, but who has the motivation to lie here - the guy who caused the serious injuries, or the officer (who arrived on the scene by car)?

Bravo!

So what if bikers ride side by side? Does it warrant slamming your vehicle into them?

Its a shame! said:

Hey "Jungle Jim" and "Support for Dr. Thompson", you may want to check the facts before you type. The two, according to their GPS units, were going 29MPH in a 30MPH zone with a double yellow line. It didn't matter if they were riding single file or side by side. There was no reason for the "good" doctor to pass them. It been a car going speed limit in front of him would he have illegaly passed the car and then slammed on the brakes?

For some reason logic goes out the door for some people when they start taking about the right of bicyles to be on the road.

Yes, I often slip into my spandex (hello its called lycra, spandex went out a long time ago) and hop on my bike and think, "boy if I could plant my head through the back of a car, LAWSUIT!"
Get off your phones (your not that important), stop with the make overs in the morning (it is not helping), take a deep breath (you might drop a few pounds-yes its always the fat ones) and get to work the same time that cyclist does who you've been moaning about.

You wont post.. said:

..my previous. Yet you'll post tirade after tirade that will basically say it was ok to try and kill these people!

Licenses and INSURANCE for CYCLISTS NOW said:

All cyclist should be required by law to carry insurance and also carry some sort of license to operate.
Bikes are hazzardous and since they share the road they should obey the same laws. Cyclists break more traffic laws than you think.

Lights should be mandatory too. When a cyclist comes in-between 2 cars with about a 2 foot gap at full speed, sometimes it's hard to see the Cyclist right away. Cyclist think for some reason that they should be the only thing seen as a hazzard. They don't understand that there are other cars, pedestrians, buses..etc that the Driver is also worried about. They only think about their own path, what's in their way, and who is blocking them.

Any of you who support this degreed idiot after his history of road rage violence - and yes he has a history - need to loosen your chin straps, because they appear to be cutting off the air supply to your brain.

You may want to read the book, "America's Dumbest Doctors." An outsized sense of entitlement kills more Americans than any other form of trauma you can name.

Stop defending the indefensible.
