A gunbattle that wounded a sheriff's deputy and killed a parolee in Lawndale could have been avoided if a state parole officer had arrested the man at his family's request for being under the influence of drugs, his cousin said Wednesday.

The parole officer, however, chose not to arrest Juan Carlos Aguilar, 29, about 5 p.m. Tuesday and instead scheduled an appointment to meet Aguilar on Wednesday morning, Margarita Fox said.

"If the parole officer would have done her job, this would have never happened," Fox said. "He would have been in jail."

If this guy is from the 'lil watts' Hawthorne gang, he's probably killed or assaulted many innocent people. No loss here. I live 1/2 block from where the incident happened. We were all awoke by gunfire and helicopters. The sheriffs dept has been cleaning up Lawndale ever since they moved into their sub-station 12 years ago. Lawndale is a much safer place now. Good job guys and keep up the good work. The only good gang banger is a dead gang banger in my opinion. Also, I hope that the wounded officer has a speedy recovery.

I feel very sorry for the mother of Mr. Juan Aguiar. Her plead for help only wind up helping her son get shot. The parole officer was called for a reason. The parolee was on parole people. He violated his parole mandating that his parole officer take immediate action and detain him. The parole officer should and could have called the Lawndale police officer to come and assist him/her in the arrest. I know the Lawndale Sheriff officers are are "professional crime fighters" not crazy "gun totting" rogue cops. Mr. Juan Aguiar was a father, a son and a cousin. Calling him a "gang-banger" to deflect the many wrongs that went on that night is nonsense. All walks of life have been infected by that criminal drug Meth. Pray for this family. They have lost a loved one.
