In today's Daily Breeze, we announced that more than $2,000 has been collected to pay for a dog trainer to get Thunder, Joe Martinez's new Chihuahua, up to speed. All the information to help is at the bottom of the article.

A well-known dog trainer, Omar Muller, has agreed to come and meet Thunder and Martinez next month.

Also, Martinez's friends at the Kovacs Frey pharmacy in Redondo Beach want everyone to know they are throwing him a birthday party Thursday after closing. Anyone who wants to come by and give Martinez good wishes is welcome to do. And, while you're there, you can donate money for Thunder's training. The pharmacy has announced that anyone who donates $10 or more will receive a 10 percent discount on non-prescription items.

While I'm sympathetic to this man's dog being killed, I hope people realize that professionally trained assistance dogs who legitimately assist people with disabilities are available free of charge from the nationwide nonprofit, Canine Companions for Independence ( www.cci.org ). There is no need to hold dramatic fund raising campaigns and solicit the help of a trainer who doesn't seem to specialize in the behaviors and selection of high-quality assistance dogs. This situation is starting to feel like a circus. Legitimate assistance dogs require a very special temperament and training (not all dogs are appropriate for the role at all). If he has a serious disability and wants a serious assistance dog, go to the experts and get one-- they are available to qualified applicants for free.

Our little guy has been a mess lately, so we've taken him to do terrible dog training and so far have been amused to keep our furniture as is! Does anyone else have any experience with a 2 year old hound performing like a one month old?! I value the help.
