Redondo Beach's champion police dog Valor put to sleep

You might have read my story today on Valor the Redondo Beach police dog who was put tovalor1.jpg sleep yesterday because of medical problems.

Valor recently was the overall champion at the World Police and Fire Games in Vancouver, B.C.

But kidney problems resulted in kidney failure a couple weeks ago. His handler, Officer Ken Greenleaf, had hoped that Valor would live well enough to ride his department's Santa Claus float this year, but he decided it was time to end Valor's suffering.

That's the holiday card that Greenleaf would have handed out to children.

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
