Suspicious man offers kids ride in Redondo Beach
A man drove up to two children on a Redondo Beach street and offered them a ride, police said Monday.
Officers do not know what the man intended, but considered his actions suspicious, Redondo Beach police Lt. Joe Hoffman said.
The 11-year-old boy and his 9-year-old sister were waiting in front of their home in the 600 block of South Broadway when the man drove up at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Hoffman said.
He said, "Hey do you need a ride. Get in the car," Hoffman said.
The children said "no," ran inside and told their parents. The man drove away.
The father brought the children to the police station about four hours later.
The children told police the car was a small, older reddish car with cracked tinting in the back window.
The man was white and between 43 and 65 years old, with gray shoulder-length hair. He was tanned and unshaven.
There were no other witnesses.

It would be helpful if the schools in the area notified parents. We don't always have time to read the paper. I only found out about this thru a neighbor when I told her the principal at Casimir Middle School in Torrance alerted my 13 year old yesterday March 9, 2010. If this happened back on February 26 or March 1 as it states in the article too many days have passed to do any good. My daughter was told at the end of the day that she should walk home with a buddy and I was at work 20 miles away to do anything about it. I stayed with my daughter on the phone until she made it home. She had a leg brace and could not keep up with the kids who walked home. I wish there was a better system.
