BREAKING NEWS: Hawthorne has a new interim chief
Hawthorne has a new interim police chief. It's Bob Fager.
City Manager Jim Mitsch appointed him last night. Fager, a lieutenant, jumps over two captains and three lieutenants with more seniority.
He replaces Mike Heffner, who lost his job last week. Heffner, you'll recall, was a sergeant who got the job a few years ago over lieutenants and captains above him.
I'm working on a story.

When will Hawthorne get on the right track, doesn't Mitch know how much conflict and discord this will cause long range - I hope the Council gets going and hires a permanent City Manager as soon as possible!
Um.....if you read any of the other articles, you'd know Heffner didn't "lose" his job, he resigned. Get it straight, sheesh! Good luck to Bob Fager in straightening out the mess left by the idiot, Heffner.
But will the new Chief put out an APB for missing Mixers?
Jim Mitsch is exactly what Hawthorn needs right now. His integrity is unquestionable. The Mayor is dirty and the mixer is just the tip of the
ice berg. Mitsch will clean up the greed abd dishonesty of the Mayor and his cohorts. His appointment of Bob Fager was a great choice and the Hawthorn P.D. respects his choice. I think Hawthorn would be well advised to give Mitsch a two or three year contract to give him him time to restore order to the city. He has already reduced the city's 5 million deficit by over 2 million and has charted a course to cover the othr 3 million not bad for a couple of monhs work. You Go Jim!!
Congrats to Chief Fager and the men and women of the Hawthorne Police Dept. More south bay city's should replace their Police Chiefs with competent leaders. Could this be the beginning of a trend??
