Police searched the Mira Costa High School campus today after a backpack containing a large amount of matches and lighter fluid was discovered on campus.

Students were placed in lockdown about 10 a.m. Nothing else was found and no crime was believed committed, police said.

"At no time, was it thought that staff or students were in danger, however, as a precautionary measure, a cursory search of the campus was conducted," Manhattan Beach police Officer Stephanie Martin said.

Besides offices and rooms, students' backpacks were checked.

Students were released to their lunch break when the search was completed.

Although no crime was committed, possession of the lighter fluid and matches were in violation of school policy, police said.

An investigation was under way.
