A Lawndale gardener was sentenced Friday to spend 27 years to life in prison for hacking a roommate to death and maiming another man with a machete in their home last year.

Carlos Humberto Arias Donis, 26, sat quietly in Torrance Superior Court, listening to a Spanish interpreter as Judge Mark Arnold imposed the sentence.

Donis will not be eligible for parole for 27 years, but his release is unlikely because of the serious nature of his crimes.

Larry Altman has covered crime in the South Bay since 1990. He's seen it all - the missing model who turned up dead in the desert, the wives found dead in trunks, the high-school coaches who get a little too close to their players. He drives his young colleagues nuts with his "I remember when" stories. He welcomes your tips and observations about the present, and you can mix in a little Lakers basketball talk if you like.
