Two Los Angeles men have been arrested as suspects in a burglary at a Hawthorne residence, police said Monday.
Thomas Drummond, 30, and Martin Soto, 21, drew suspicion about noon Friday when they suddenly ran when they encountered a police officer as they walked at 142nd Place and Isis Avenue, Hawthorne police Lt. Gary Tomatani said.
One man threw gloves into nearby bushes. The other dropped a backpack. Both ran south across Rosecrans Avenue.
Police searched the area and found them within 10 minutes.
The backpack contained what police believed was stolen property, including a laptop computer, jewelry, and other miscellaneous items, Tomatani said.
Soto and Drummond were arrested on suspicion of residential burglary.
Later Friday, a resident in the 5400 block of 142nd Place called police to report that his home had been burglarized.
The stolen items in the backpack belonged to the resident, Tomatani said.
Police have alerted residents about two late night/early morning burglaries in Palms in which a male and female burglar entered apartment complex laundry rooms, pried open coin-operated machines and removed coins.
The man is white or Latino, 25 to 30 years old, 155 pounds, 5 feet 7 inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has black hair.
Anyone with information was asked to call Los Angeles Police Department detectives at 10-482-6363.
Police advised residents to make sure doors and windows are locked.
No businesses sold alcohol to minors during a police sting operation at 26 locations in Manhattan Beach and El Segundo, authorities said.
Police and state Alcoholic Beverage Control agents sent a minor into the businesses Oct. 21. Any clerks or businesses violating laws prohibiting sales to people under 21 would have been cited.
The Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and El Segundo police departments recently received a $50,000 state grant to conduct the operations through June.
Thieves stole the Torrance Little League's $2,000 lawnmower over the weekend, a league official said Monday.
Someone cut through the chain on the maintenance gate, then cut the lock on a storage shed at the league's field at 1740 Plaza Del Amo, league vice president Steve Dann said.
The lawnmower was described as a high-tech device that propels itself.
"We were hoping it would leak out and somebody would know who did this," Dann said. "It's not something you are going to cut your lawn in Torrance."
In the meantime, a parent with a landscaping business will mow the diamonds.
About 500 children participate in the league, Dann said.

Simon is 6 feet 2 inches tall, 200 pounds with blue eyes. He is balding with white hair on the sides.
Simon was last seen wearing an unknown color polo shirt and tan pants. He was driving a 2008 Lincoln MKZ, California license 6DKG745.

UPDATE: He returned home safe the next day.
I drove up to the scene of this horrible accident shortly after it happened. The paramedics were putting a sheet over who I now know to be Annamay. I would like to disagree with the previous poster who said the Honda [Civic] wasn't horribly messed up.
I was stopped in traffic by police with the rear of the car towards me and the angle was such that the passenger side was more exposed. I agree that I did not see an airbag on the passenger side. I did not have a view of the driver's side. I had to park away from the scene in order to walk past the accident and get my children to school.
I asked a policeman if the victim was wearing a seatbelt and he said, "yes". I subsequently learned on my return trip that it was a single car accident and smashing into the light pole at the intersection at a high rate of speed seemed the likely factor, that combined with the rain this morning.
The police added that the Civic was heading up hill on Hawthorne (towards the high school) so the excessive speed (if true) is doubly troubling. If another high school student was the driver I hope we can all learn from this and teach our newer drivers about driving in foul weather, as well as those adults who don't drive wisely in the rain in LA. It was terribly tragic and having to sit there at the scene for so long has driven the tragedy even more into my heart and memory. My thoughts and prayers to her friends and family. God bless.
