Two Los Angeles men have been arrested as suspects in a burglary at a Hawthorne residence, police said Monday.

Thomas Drummond, 30, and Martin Soto, 21, drew suspicion about noon Friday when they suddenly ran when they encountered a police officer as they walked at 142nd Place and Isis Avenue, Hawthorne police Lt. Gary Tomatani said.

One man threw gloves into nearby bushes. The other dropped a backpack. Both ran south across Rosecrans Avenue.

Police searched the area and found them within 10 minutes.

The backpack contained what police believed was stolen property, including a laptop computer, jewelry, and other miscellaneous items, Tomatani said.

Soto and Drummond were arrested on suspicion of residential burglary.

Later Friday, a resident in the 5400 block of 142nd Place called police to report that his home had been burglarized.

The stolen items in the backpack belonged to the resident, Tomatani said.
