Thieves stole the Torrance Little League's $2,000 lawnmower over the weekend, a league official said Monday.

Someone cut through the chain on the maintenance gate, then cut the lock on a storage shed at the league's field at 1740 Plaza Del Amo, league vice president Steve Dann said.

The lawnmower was described as a high-tech device that propels itself.

"We were hoping it would leak out and somebody would know who did this," Dann said. "It's not something you are going to cut your lawn in Torrance."

In the meantime, a parent with a landscaping business will mow the diamonds.

About 500 children participate in the league, Dann said.
