Man shot in Rancho Palos Verdes assaulted father, had record of it

| | Comments (0) |
A man shot to death in Rancho Palos Verdes took a "shooting stance" and pointed a metal object at deputies who had responded to a report that he had assaulted his elderly father, investigators said today.

Robert Evan Larue, 48, was killed in the Tuesday night confrontation in the 29300 block of Golden Meadow Drive.

Larue's 85-year-old father contacted deputies about 7:15 p.m. to report that he was assaulted by his son, deputies said.

The deputies tried to talk to Larue outside the house, but he was uncooperative and would not comply with their orders. The man told deputies he had a Glock, a type of handgun, and said he did not want to "Go back," deputies said.

"The suspect went behind a car, took a shooting stance with a metallic object in his hand and pointed it at the deputies, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred," the Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

Larue was hit in the upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies did not reveal whether the metallic object was a gun.

County court records showed Larue was charged Feb. 24, 2010 with dependent/adult elder abuse and assault. He pleaded no contest to the elder abuse charge four months later and was sentenced to spend 40 days in jail, perform 45 hours of community service and serve five years on probation.

Records showed he was convicted of disturbing the peace in December 1997.

UPDATE: 60ish man shot by deputy had assaulted elderly father

| | Comments (0) |
RANCHO PALOS VERDES (CNS) - An investigation was under way today into
the death of a man shot by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy in Rancho
Palos Verdes while allegedly holding a weapon after assaulting his 85-year-old
father.

The man, who was around 60, assaulted his father at a home in the 29300
block of Golden Meadow Drive around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, said Los Angeles County
Sheriff's Lt. Mike Rosson, adding that the victim called authorities from a
nearby home, then stayed there.

When deputies arrived in response to the complaint, they found the
alleged assailant uncooperative, Rosson told a camera crew at the scene. The
man told deputies he had a Glock, and, while they remained outside, kept going
in and out of the house, Rosson said.

The son told deputies that he would not go back, but it was not clear if
was referring to prison or something else, he said.

Deputies tried to talk to the man, but he continued going in and out of
the house, then emerged from the garage holding something in one of his hand,
drawing fire from a deputy fearing for life, Rosson said, adding that a weapon
was recovered at the scene.

The man was declared dead at the scene at 7:18 p.m., said Deputy Lillian
Peck of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. No deputy was hurt.

Homicide detectives began investigating the circumstances of the
shooting around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Peck said. Some remained at the scene this
morning, providing an unusual sight.

``There aren't hardly any shootings in Rancho Palos Verdes,'' noted Sgt.
Keith Taylor, the watch commander at the sheriff's Lomita Station.

Manhattan Beach restaurant's license to sell booze revoked

| | Comments (0) |
sun&Moon.JPGState authorities have revoked a Manhattan Beach restaurant's license to sell liquor because its employees sold alcohol to minors during three police sting operations, police said Tuesday.

The Sushi Sun & Moon Cafe at 1131 Manhattan Ave. is now in the process of transferring its alcohol license to a new owner, Manhattan Beach police Sgt. Chris Vargas said.

Police cited employees at the business in September during a sting in which minors were successful in buying liquor. It was the third violation in the last three years during a police sting operation, Vargas said.

Police conducted the stings in response to complaints from parents, Vargas said.

The state Secretary of State's website lists the Japanese restaurant's parent company as Cafe Bakery Com Inc. with the owner's name Junko Yatsuka.

Attempts to contact Yatsuka were unsuccessful.

ABC officials revoked the license on Dec. 9, but allowed the owner to sell the license. It is in escrow to be moved to Pier View Properties, which plans to do business at the site as Hampton's Bar and Grill.

A 30-day license suspension to sell alcohol at the site began Dec. 22.

The actions are the latest against South Bay businesses who sell alcohol to people under 21 years old.

Earlier this month, Redondo Beach city officials suspended the business license of Pierside Liquor at 310 Torrance Boulevard because of repeated sales of alcohol to minors, authorities said.

Man steals fireman's personal truck -- from the fire station

| | Comments (0) |
Richard Pollock.jpgThe Harley-Davidson dealer thought something was odd last month when a man repeatedly tried to trade in a pickup truck for a motorcycle.

He was right. The pickup truck belonged to a Hermosa Beach firefighter. It was stolen, police said, from outside the Hermosa Beach fire station while the fireman was on a call.

According to police, video surveillance cameras showed Richard Pollock, 52, riding up to the Hermosa Beach fire station on Pier Avenue Nov. 30 just moments after firefighters responded to a 4:40 a.m. emergency call.

Pollock, police said, parked his bicycle in the bushes and walked into the station's open garage door. He entered the firefighter's living quarters, picked through their bags and belongings, and found some keys.

Pollock then went around back, used the remote to figure out which vehicle it opened, got in and drove off, Hermosa Beach police Detective Mick Gaglia said.

The firefighter learned his truck was gone when he tried to go home about 90 minutes later.
Gaglia said officers figured the thief was local. The beach cruiser contained stickers for local bands.

As detectives worked to identify him, Pollock drove to Victorville and allegedly tried to trade in the stolen truck at a Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealership, Gaglia said.

Police were called and he was soon arrested.

Prosecutors have filed burglary, possession of stolen property and vehicle theft against Pollock.

Jail records show Torrance and Redondo Beach police officers, and Carson sheriff's deputies have arrested Pollock in recent weeks.

Gaglia said the crime was the first time he recalled where someone took a firefighter's vehicle, but "we've had other things taken from the Fire Department before, equipment inside the garage area."

Each person was cited for furnishing alcohol to minors.

In each case, the decoy told the adult his or her true age.

Police on Monday were trying to figure out why a gunman shot a Lawndale man to death in San Pedro as he stood talking with friends.

The motive behind the Sunday morning slaying of 48-year-old Brayton Charles Crumb remained unknown, but a detective said investigators do not believe gangs were involved.

Crumb was convicted in 2006 of possession of drug paraphernalia, the records show.

Another panga discovered in San Pedro; 2 arrests

| | Comments (0) |
Two possible smugglers were arrested this morning when another panga fishing boat was discovered on a San Pedro beach, police said.

The discovery was made about 7 a.m. near Barbara Street below Point Fermin Park.
Police located a Pelican briefcase on the boat. It was unclear what it contained.

"The boat's been located, officers are clearing the boat and securing it as a crime scene," said Rachel Campbell, a spokeswoman for the Port of Los Angeles police.

On Wednesday, authorities arrested 12 suspected drug smugglers and discovered 31 pounds of marijuana aboard a panga fishing boat at Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Smugglers -- carrying people or drugs -- have increasingly used 25-foot skiffs to enter the United States in recent months to avoid tighter land border crossings.

Police previously found pangas in Palos Verdes Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes.
