A gunman in a sport utility vehicle shot and killed a 48-year-old man talking with friends on a San Pedro street, police said today.

The gunman pulled up in the vehicle as the victim talked with friends on the sidewalk on Mesa Street near 22nd Street at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The killer got out, walked up to the victim and shot him multiple times with a handgun. He then got back into the SUV and drove away

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The motive for the shooting was unknown, police said. The victim's name was not released, pending notification of relatives.

Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Los Angeles police Harbor Division homicide Detectives Julie Scruggs or Mike Villareal at (310) 726-7888 or (310) 726-7880.
