Here we go again. Every time we write about a crime occurring in the unincorporated area between Carson and Harbor Gateway, we get complaints about what we call that stretch of space.

The city manager of Carson sent us an angry letter explaining that the helicopter shooting incident this morning did not happen in Carson. Those of us at the Daily Breeze know that and never said it did, but other folks in the TV media apparently never open a Thomas Guide.

We understand why the good folks of Carson don't want to be tied to the problems that occur outside its boundaries. The fact that deputies at the Carson station patrol the unincorporated area doesn't help.

The problem is the area between Harbor Gateway and Carson has no name. Thus, we say things happen "near Carson" or "near Harbor Gateway."

We don't have much of a choice. I've actually looked at a big map on the wall here and measured where a crime has occurred to determine whether to say "near Carson" or "near Harbor Gateway."

So, it was "unincorporated area west of Carson" in today's story. It's the nearest named city. We could have said "west of Paris," but that's a good distance away.

Then we got this email from a reader:

"do you have a problem calling it torrance

pubic records states the city is torrance- there is no such city called near carson , west carson, west of carson, by carson or harbor gateway.

If you need help using a map let me know."

Hmmmm. First of all, it's "public."

Students at Marina del Rey Middle School took first prize in the 2008 Traffic Safety Mural Contest.

The annual contest is sponsored by the LAPD, Automobile Club of Southern California and the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The theme, "Anti-DUI," required art students to sketch, design and paint a wall-size mural "depicting themes of traffic safety and awareness in an effort to enhance the quality of life in their community."

Marina del Rey Middle School is located at 12500 Braddock Dr.

Samuel Gompers and Thomas Starr King middle schools in Los Angeles came in second and third place, respectively.

Otis College of Art Design judged the murals.

Reward offered to solve killing near Marina del Rey

This reward was actually offered and publicized in December, but police obviously still need help to solve this crime.

Police on Tuesday will hold a news conference to discuss a $50,000 reward offer in the Oct. 14 killing of Armando Mariscal Jr. of San Pedro.

Mariscal, 33, was shot while stopped at a red light on Lincoln Boulevard at Maxella Avenue after he and friends left a Venice bar where they had watched an Oakland Raiders football game. Someone in a white utility van pulled alongside them and fired several gunshots, killing Mariscal.

One bullet grazed his girlfriend, who was five months pregnant with his daughter.

LAPD detectives said previously that it did not appear the killing was the result of any disputes during the game.

Detectives will hold a news conference in front of the Pacific Division station. Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, LAPD Deputy Chief Terry Hara and Captain Joseph Hiltner will make the announcement.

Mariscal’s family members will be in attendance. Mariscal spent most of his life in Harbor Gateway before moving to San Pedro.

New Lennox captain; new Lawndale lieutenant

A 26-year veteran sheriff’s deputy will take over next month as captain of the Lennox sheriff’s station.

Matt Dendo, a lieutenant at the station, will be promoted to captain and take over for Capt. Kevin Goran, who was promoted to commander.

The Lennox station has jurisdiction in Lennox, Lawndale, and the unincorporated areas of Del Aire, El Camino Village and Athens.

Goran will work in the Sheriff’s Department’s Region II offices, which oversee a number of stations including Lennox, Lomita, Carson and Marina del Rey.

In addition, Lt. Dominic Valencia was named to head the Lawndale service center. He succeeds Lt. Arlene Berner, who also was promoted to captain.

She will work in the Sheriff’s Department’s Community Oriented Policing Services Bureau in Monterey Park.

The changes will take effect in early April.
