Former Gardena High coach gets three years for pot

| | Comments (2) |

Former Gardena High School football coach Brandon Pettway was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison for one count of marijuana possession for sale or transport.

Pettway, 26, had previously pleaded no contest to the count to Torrance Superior Court Judge Laura Ellison after he failed to reach a deal with prosecutors.

After the brief sentencing hearing, a line of Pettway's supporters hugged him good-bye and wished him well before he was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Pettway was arrested last April following an investigation into drug sales activity on 134th Place in Gardena, police previously said.

A search of Pettway's home in the 2100 block of 134th Place yielded drugs and a firearm.

Agents raid medical marijuana business in Marina del Rey

Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents raided a medical marijuana dispensary inĀ marijuanaleaf.jpgMarina del Rey earlier today.

They served a search warrant about noon at Marina Caregivers, 730 Washington Blvd.

Sarah Pullen, a DEA spokeswoman, said agents were looking for violations of federal law, but she could not discuss what exactly. No one was arrested.

A man who answered the phone at the place said he had done nothing wrong. He wouldn't identify himself.

A couple of medical marijuana dispensaries were raided in Venice as well.

California voters approved marijuana for medical issues in 1996, but federal law still says no.

Probation searches net weapons and drugs

| | Comments (1) |

From City News Service:

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Unannounced searches of Los Angeles County probationers and their homes netted about 100 weapons and $245,000 in illegal drugs and resulted in 132 arrests in the month of December, Supervisor Michael Antonovich announced today.

The DISARM Program -- Developing Increased Safety through Arms Reduction Management -- is aimed at keeping probationers from committing new crimes by subjecting them to spot checks.

Since its inception in February 2000, the program has resulted in 10,446 arrests and the seizure of 4,856 weapons and more than $306 million in illegal drugs.

Ten percent of probationers in the program have been found in violation of the terms of their probation, Antonovich said.

The supervisor pushed for the program's creation in the wake of an attack carried out by white supremacist parolee Buford Furrow, who shot and wounded five people at a Jewish daycare center in Granada Hills before killing a Filipino-American mail carrier on Aug. 10, 1999
