Fun, Fun, Fun, Till the Coppers took the G-Ride Away

A few weeks back, on a Friday night as the sun was disappearing, officers with the gang unit with the LAPD's West Valley Station sighted a black Ford Expedition driving erratically near 7115 Darby Ave. This guy was all over the place, swerving, jumping curbs, rollin' around like he was Lindsay Lohan or something.

When they pulled him over, the driver turned out to be a 14-year-old kid. He'd borrowed his dad's SUV while the old man was asleep and now found himself in handcuffs, sweating it out as the cops called his pop.

The kid admitted he'd been in trouble before, getting busted for smoking weed in public, and he gave the officers a bit of lip. Once they got his dad on the phone, they offered him a rather Solomonic decision: do you want us to cite your son as an unlicensed driver and impound your truck for 30 days OR do you want to report your son as an unauthorized operator and we can arrest him?

The dad elected to send his son to jail and get his ride back. After a brief wait, while the boy hung out in handcuffs, a cop named Lee explained what had gone down to the dad and a couple relatives. With the arrest, he could take possession of the truck right away and probably bail his son out of jail later that night.

Lee suggested they have a talk with the boy, whom he thought might be leaning toward gang involvement. The men grumbled and shrugged.

"Kids!" one exclaimed.

The cops gave the dad a few moments to lecture his son and they conversed quietly. Then they put him in the back of a black and white, handed the keys to the Ford over, and went about their nights. The dad had his car. The kid went to jail.
