More on distraction burglaries

A Daily News reader, Lavina Suarez, weighs in on a story I did the other day about distraction burglars. She writes:

The LAPD source "How to avoid being a victim" has some bad information regarding "Ask to see their identification or HAVE _THEM_ CALL THEIR COMPANY FOR CONFIRMATION." Who do you think they'll call after they show their fake ID? Probably their accomplice. The best bet is to not give anyone permission to enter the yard to cut trees in a neighbors yard. If their legitimate, they'll figure out a way to cut the trees; and never go outside with them. As far as the DWP, Cable Company, telephone company, or, the "we'll clean the carpet in one room free, right now" solicitors, I wouldn't let anyone in unless I had called and requested they come out. Bottom line; don't let anyone in your house unless you requested them. My Aunt was a victim twice. Once by "tree trimmers', and once by "DWP" workers who had her stand in the bathroom turning the water on and off. They started getting vicious when she confronted them with her suspicion that they were stealing from her.

Thanks for reading, Lavina, sorry your aunt had to go through this horrible experience. Hopefully, others out there will take your advice.
