City offers $10,000 bucks for leads on San Fernando shooter's whereabouts

San Fernando's usually a pretty quiet town, with little in the way of the violent crime that mars surrounding parts of the Northeast Valley. It's only had one shooting this year, but that was enough to get the City Council riled up earlier this week.

On July 2, a suspected gang member showed up in San Fernando and got into a beef with some locals. He disappeared for a few hours and returned to the 1100 block of Kewen Street slightly before 10 p.m. He lurked next to a dumpster, then popped out and drew down on two guys walking home from a nearby store.

According to the San Fernando Police Department, the gentlemen had nothing to do with the earlier argument. They were just coolly walking down the street when the suspect, a shaven headed Latino in his mid-20s who stands 5-foot-8 and weighs 190 pounds, started shooting. The fact that the victims had nothing to do with the gangbanger didn't seem to matter to him when he squeezed the trigger of his small caliber pistol.

"They just come into San Fernando from other areas and pick someone," said Lt. Tony Ruelas. "Whether they're a gangster or not, it doesn't even matter."

The suspect blasted away at the men, aged 33 and 46, hitting the first twice and the second once. Neither victim has gang ties or had been involved in the earlier fracas, but both ended up in the hospital in critical condition. Both were treated and later released.

Though the shooter then had a lengthy walk back to an accomplice's car, believed to be either a white, late model Chevy Impala or a Lexus sedan, witnesses had little to offer police in terms of information. The car disappeared north on San Fernando Mission Boulevard. Frustrated by the lack of leads, the cops went to the San Fernando City Council, which authorized a $10 grand reward for information on the case earlier this week.

Anyone with info on the case should give a call to SFPD. Operators are standing by at (818) 898-1267.
