Appeals court upholds conviction of former cop
An appeals court has upheld the conviction of a former Los Angeles police officer who was sentenced to five years in prison for a drunken-boating accident that nearly killed a passenger on a personal watercraft on Lake San Antonio in May 2005. Among his arguments, David Guzman contended that there was insufficient evidence to prove that he was drunk when he hit a Sea Doo carrying 19-year-old Jason Penalba and left him critically injured in the water. montereycountyherald.com

The Los Angeles Times today has a fascinating tale of a new gang in Lynwood that is the center of a lawsuit alleging racism. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has a squad that calls itself the Regulators, complete with tattoos of a skull-faced man holding a shotgun, fire screaming from its barrels. They are accused of being extortionists, among other things. latimes.com
