After decades of talk, the LAPD gets in-car police cameras

Or at least 300 police cars deployed in South Los Angeles will get the in-car cameras. The City Council unanimously approved the $5 million pilot project today.

First recommended by the Christopher Commission, formed in the wake of the Rodney King beating, the cameras are supposed to provide objective insights into police stops and monitor arrests and pursuits.

“Cameras in cars protect cops and protect civil rights at the same time,” said Councilman Jack Weiss, chair of the council's Public Safety Committee, in a prepared statement. “The council today took a great step forward with in-car video cameras that will be a win-win for everyone.”
