"DDD" and Yeats

| | Comments (0) |

Does anybody ever read the little inspiring quotes from famous people that come at the end of e-mails?

Here's a lofty one from William Butler Yeats:

"What is there left for us that have seen the newly discovered stability of things changed from enthusiasm to weariness but to rediscover an art of the theatre, which shall be joyful, fantastic, extravagant, whimsical, beautiful, resonant, and altogether reckless?" - W.B. Yeats

Gotta love that, no? I mean, he just says it all.

What cracked me up was the fact that Yeats' pithy little quote about the joy extravagance, etc. of the theater followed the press release about "Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical" -- which I plan to see by the way. It was kind of an off Broadway cult favorite back in 2002 (Sherie Rene Scott played the, er, titular cheerleader.). Now it's coming to the Key Club for a bunch of Thursdays starting Aug. 2.

From the e-mail pitch (He needn't have bothered. He had me at "Debbie") DEBBIE DOES DALLAS is a modern morality tale told as a comic musical of tragic proportions in the language of the raunchy burlesque.

Fans of the burlesque and Yeats scholars are, I'm sure, equally welcome.

Debbie Does Dallas : The Musical. . Directed by Troy Heard and choreographed by Cheryl Texiera. Playing Thursdays beginning August 2. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Tickets: $35.00 - $55.00. Student rush tickets available at the Keyclub box office on day of show for $15.00. For tickets or more information, please call 310-274-5800 or visit www.ticketmaster.com . DEBBIE DOES DALLAS : THE MUSICAL is sponsored in part by America Apparel and Crunch.

About The City
in Curtains

As the theater critic of the Los Angeles Daily News, Evan Henerson goes to a lot of plays in a city where most people go to the movies. For the sake of the people who put on these plays — and, yes, for the sake of his job — he thinks you should do the same.
