Graham's a "Doll"
Actually, she's the doll. News out of New York is that Lauren Graham has been tabbed by director Des McAnuff to play the "marry me already!"-minded Miss Adelaide in the revival of "Guys and Dolls." Nathan Detroit, Miss A's hubby of choice, will be essayed by Oliver Platt.
The stage-trained Graham was talking about a return to the boards when I interviewed her about the movie "A Flash of Genius." Her eight season run playing Lorelai Gilmore on on "The Gilmore Girls" didn't leave a lot of time for stage runs. Her last live appearance would have been in the Kaufman and Hart comedy "Once in a Lifetime" at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2002. That play, BTW, is not a musical.
"It was important to me," Graham said of doing a play. "It was getting to be, if I go through this whole TV show without doing any stage, it's going to be like 10 years (between plays) and I don't want this to be."
"I went to graduate school and I have an MFA (from Southern Methodist University) . I did a lot of theater and some regional theater. I kind of started working pretty quickly after that in commercials, and then TV. It just kind of happened fast. In L.A., people are like 'A Masters degree? Why do you have that?'"
Graham hinted that she was in negotiations for a possible play that would go up in New York, and that's all she would tell me.
I should have asked for a hint.
Anyway, good casting. Wonder who they'll get for Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown.
