Get a front-line perspective on the fire fight without braving the flames on the Scan America Web site, where you can hear live audio from the San Fernando Valley (Windows Media Player required).

What you'll hear are mostly exchanges from Verdugo dispatch and the Los Angeles County Fire Department as they battle two blazes that had burned more than 18,000 acres as of Tuesday night.

Scan America includes audio from across the country -- all acquired through online scanners maintained by "a fine group of volunteers" that you can join.

All you need is a computer that you're willing to leave on all the time, a DSL or cable modem Internet connection and an audio card. The site says volunteering won't slow down your machine.
