USC coach Lane Kiffin hired Scottie Hazelton of North Dakota State to be the Trojans' linebackers coach. This definitely reeks of a Pete Carroll recommendation because Hazelton worked Seahawks defensive coordinator Casey Bradley. Which folIlows the theory I mentioned yesterday about Kiffin having few connections outside of Carroll and his father, Monte Kiffin. Hazelton also coached at Michigan Tech, Missouri ...

The great fear a year ago when President Obama unveiled his budget for 2012 was that he caved to the GOP and Tea Party hardliners and meat axed dozens of vital programs and agencies. They included community service block grants which fund an array of community education, health and social service programs in poor, underserved, largely inner-city neighborhoods, cut programs ...

There's a computer center, a creative writing table, a math area and a library. What sounds like a traditional school campus is actually an early-education center, where pint-size preschoolers are eased into the rigors of the three R's. Barbara Jones in the Daly News. "By the time they reach kindergarten, they have a very strong grasp of school readiness," said ...

The Clippers destroyed the Charlotte Bobcats, 111-86, in Chris Paul's North Carolina homecoming. Not much of a game, to say the least. Paul was brilliant with 18 points, five rebounds, 14 assists and two steals. Blake Griffin has 21 points and 10 rebounds while handing the Bobcats their 14th straight loss. The Clips are back in action Monday in Dallas. ...

Perhaps the finest illustration of the kind of afternoon UCLA had on Saturday afternoon against Cal: Middway through the second half, Bears senior guard Jorge Gutierrez missed a shot, backup forward Roberth Thurman grabbed the rebound, missed the ship shot, grabbed the rebound and awkwardly laid the ball in the hoop while drawing a foul and falling to the ...

Staff photo by Michael Owen Baker The next owner of the Dodgers slid some of the caprese salad appetizer next to the spicy fried calamari, careful not to interfere with the integrity of Sisley Italian Kitchen's famous Italian quesadilla that was already in front him. UCLA started off well against Cal on Saturday afternoon at the LA Sports Arena because Joshua Smith started off well. And he didn't even start.
