Dippin' Dots

| | Comments (6) |

Walking downtown La Verne before Monday night's council meeting, I was startled to see that Dippin' Dots is opening an ice cream, or whatever it is, parlor at 2310 D. St. just above Third. The sign on the door says the opening is 10 a.m. today.

The name Dippin' Dots is familiar to L.A. County Fairgoers: The so-called "ice cream of the future" chain has had a stand outside one of the exhibit halls for years. The product itself is served as a pile of round frozen pieces the size of BBs, hence the "dots."

Dippin' Dots is also sold at Rancho Cucamonga Quakes games and at movie theaters in Chino and Chino Hills, according to its website's store locator.

In its page on Dippin' Dots, Wikipedia notes that the ice cream of the future hasn't quite become the ice cream of the present. I'm pleased to learn the company was founded by a fellow Illinoisan, though.

There used to be a Dippin' Dots at the Food Court in Montclair Plaza. Not sure if it's still there.

Incidentally, Dippin' Dots illustrates the fallacy of trying to be futuristic. Today Dippin' Dots seems as dated as an old Star Trek episode.

I first remember Dippin Dots at Knotts Berry Farm. Hey uh Valarie..can you please press your caps lock button?

nah, I think Valarie is required to use the all-caps mode. As anyone who has worked at a newspaper can tell you, most of the readers who e-mail or call reporters are usually yelling incoherently about something meaningless. Since this blog originates at a newspaper, I think "THEY ARE POPULAR IN SAN DIEGO" etc. is appropriate.

Ha ha that La Verne store was open for a nano second and gone. Like soooo soooo many of us former dippin dots franchisees we bought into a faulty business plan and got soaked by curt jones. In an all-out no-holds barred, everyone is approved as a franchisee back in 2006-2008. The dippin dots corporation needed cash to pay legal bills they incurred in their fight against Mini melts for patent infringement. Thus people like us bought into the faulty dippin dots franchise system and lost--big time. Plus their product sucks.
