The Belgians are coming! The Belgians are coming!

Why should we keep a wary eye on Belgium? Two reasons:

1) The Back Abbey, a pub specializing in imported, and pricey, Belgian beers, opened this week in Claremont. (Here's a review.)

2) A Belgium-based brewer made a $46 billion offer for American beer icon Anheuser-Busch.

I don't know what the Belgians want, but it may be our hearts, our souls and our livers.

I'm telling you, you gotta watch out for Belgium. They invented the two most potent tools for world domination, comics and fries.

On the other hand, when I lived there, even the Belgians referred to the place as "the Poland of Western Europe" and told Polack jokes about the other group (Walloons about Flemish, Flemish about Walloons).

In any case, although I don't like Belgian beer that much, I can't imagine that InBev could lower the quality of Bud.

[Pretty sure Americans invented comics, if that's any consolation. -- DA]

I just have a few questions...is there a Belgian bouncer in case of any drunken melees? Was the beer the same consistency as say Aunt Jemima's Syrup...you know dark and thick?

[I haven't been there and I don't drink anyway, so you'll have to try the beer yourself. -- DA]

Damn. I thought this was gonna be about Belgian waffles at BC Cafe.

*Damn*

Of course Zeke's offa Vineyard is also perfectly sublime (!).

["Sublime" isn't the word I'd have chosen but it's a good place. -- DA]
