'Roman Holiday,' for free

No, Pomona still doesn't have a single movie theater. Nevertheless, its Fresh Air Flicks series this month on an inflatable outdoor screen in downtown's Thomas Street Plaza is filling in the gaps in my cinematic knowledge.

The past two Fridays introduced me to "Back to the Future" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," neither of which I'd seen, having felt a bit old for them when they were released.

Tonight brings "Roman Holiday," the William Holden-Audrey Hepburn movie, and I'm not sure what my excuse is for never having seen that one.

Perhaps I'll come up with one before the movie's 8:30 p.m. start. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy.

No Ferris Bueller or Back to the Future?? I'm thinking you weren't an '80s kid, were ya?

[I was in college when "Back" (1985) and "Ferris" (1986) were released and neither was really on my radar screen at the time. -- DA]

Oops, David, as I'm sure you will find out tonight when you watch Roman Holiday -- the male lead is not William Holden, but Gregory Peck -- Holden was with Miss Hepburn in the movie Sabrina.

Wow, and being the '80s kid myself, and in college at that time as well --- movies were my thing back then and still are today. Glad you were able to catch up on two of the great '80s films -- Back and Bueller.

Hope you enjoy the movie.

[I did, although as soon as the titles rolled, I groaned at seeing Peck's name. I was wondering where my brain came up with Holden and you've supplied the explanation; I must have mixed "Roman Holiday" up with "Sabrina." -- DA]

Has anyone else asked this question?

Why does this page not display properly? It only happens on your David Allen blog.

At the bottom of the page where the "Leave a comment" section appears there is an overlay at the bottom right side of the page that blocks out some of the text.

The things that appear out of place are the "Search" box, "Headlines," "Other blogs" and an "Advertisement" block.

I don't think it is my computer because no other blog appears this way...not The Bizz or The Start Button.

Is it only me?

Thanks!

[I don't know how to respond because the blog doesn't overlay any text when I look at it. Anyone else? -- DA]

It's funny how you felt old for these movies while you were in college but somehow Pomona can make you feel so young. Everybody should go to Pomona!

David,

OK, I'm 47 and remember when Ferris Bueller's Day Off (FBDO) and Back To The Future (BTTF) came out and I don't remember feeling "too old" for them then; in fact FBDO in one of my favorite '80s movies (the others being The Breakfast Club, Fast Times At Ridgemont High and National Lampoon's Family Vacation). I also remember when they were filming BTTF at the "old" Puente Hills Mall in front of The Broadway and May Co.

If you, on the other hand, had written about the good times seeing Glenn Miller & Tommy Dorsey back in the "the good ol' days" then I'd say, "yeah Dave, you're old."
